Respect the majority – Protect the minorities

Any attempt to make democracy work needs to apply these two principles in a practical way.

The extent to which these two principles are not observed is a measure of how badly a democracy is performing.

For example, a political party may push through legislation that the majority do not want or may introduce a measure that the majority do not oppose but which is punitive to a minority.
